Tiger Woods cruised to an eight-shot victory in the BMW Championship in Illinois, to go top of the FedEx Cup standings.

The American's victory at Cog Hill was the 71st tournament win of his career and came after a course-record 62 in the third round. Going into the final day with a seven-shot lead, Woods took his sixth title of the season with a final round of 68 for 19-under-par overall, eight clear of Jim Furyk and the Australian Marc Leishman.

Furyk's five-under round of 66 saw him make a late charge up the leaderboard, though he never looked likely to overhaul Woods. Leishman was two under on 69, with two birdies and no bogeys.

Padraig Harrington finished tied for sixth, on six under, with Sergio Garcia after a difficult round of 73. Garcia closed with a level-par 71. England's Luke Donald was among four tied for 10th place after a 73 while Ian Poulter shared 20th after a poor final round of 75.

Woods said: "It was a good week. I hit the ball well, but basically felt like I hit it the same as I have been. The only difference is I made a few more putts this week and got some momentum. As we all know, you have to make putts to win championships. This week I certainly made my share."

Woods said his recent putting problems had not forced him to adjust anything. "Not a thing," he said. "I didn't change anything, it's just one of those things where I was hitting a lot of lips, they just weren't going in. That's the way it goes. You're not going to make every putt.

"As long as the ball starts off on line and I've got my pace right, that's the way it goes. If you read the putts better, eventually they'll start going in. It's just a matter of time. I was patient, and here we are."

Furyk said: "You know, I've played well this year. I've played solidly, but obviously I haven't won a golf tournament. That bothers me more than anyone else, trust me. And I'm reminded of it every time I play well. The guy out there in the last group [Woods] is the reason why I haven't had a better chance to win a couple more tournaments.

"I played well this week. Really, this weekend I shot nine-under on a very, very difficult golf course. I made a big move. I'm proud of the way I played, but he was definitely in a class all of his own, and it seemed like he was playing a different golf course out there."
